The Confederation of African Football has opened an investigation into alleged misconduct during AFCON 2025 quarter-final matches. The affected fixtures involved Cameroon versus Morocco and Algeria against Nigeria.
The investigation follows reports of confrontations with referees and disturbances in post-match areas. CAF confirmed the development in a statement published on its official website on Monday. According to CAF, officials gathered match reports and reviewed multiple video recordings from the games.
The evidence reportedly indicates behaviour considered unacceptable under CAF competition regulations. As a result, CAF referred the cases to its Disciplinary Board for further examination. The body will determine appropriate sanctions if individuals are found guilty of misconduct.
CAF also confirmed it is reviewing footage involving alleged media misconduct in mixed zones. The incident reportedly occurred after one of the quarter-final matches concluded. Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 in Marrakech to secure a semifinal spot.
Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams scored the goals for the Super Eagles. However, the match ended in disorder following confrontations between Algerian players and officials. Fans also attempted a pitch invasion, but stadium security prevented escalation.
The Algerian Football Federation has since filed a formal complaint with CAF. Officials cited controversial decisions by referee Issa Sy, including a denied first-half penalty. Meanwhile, Morocco defeated Cameroon 2-0 in another heated quarter-final encounter.
Cameroon disputed two penalty appeals involving Moroccan defender Adam Masina. Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, rejected claims of officiating bias during his post-match briefing. CAF reiterated its commitment to professionalism and discipline at all sanctioned competitions.
The body warned that sanctions await anyone violating conduct standards at CAF events.
