The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced expanding the Africa Cup of Nations. President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the tournament will increase from 24 to 28 teams. This decision highlights CAF’s dedication to world-class football and showcasing top African players globally.
Speaking at a press conference after an executive committee meeting, Motsepe emphasized returning the best talent to the continent. He noted that the expansion offers more opportunities for emerging national teams. However, he did not reveal how the additional four teams will fit into the tournament format.
Previously, the competition featured 24 teams following a rise from 16 in 2019. Motsepe assured fans that the 2027 finals will proceed in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. He added that a second tournament is scheduled for 2028, after which the event will occur every four years.
Looking ahead, CAF plans to launch a Nations League in 2029. This tournament will feature a 16-team final held biennially. Motsepe stressed the importance of predictable and consistent fixtures to develop football across Africa. He highlighted East Africa as a region with high potential for growth and talent.
The latest expansion reinforces CAF’s strategy to strengthen African football. By increasing participation, the organization aims to create more competitive opportunities and elevate the continent’s global football profile.
