Following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken swift action to honour the late leader. Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a UK hospital, is set to receive full state honours, with the nation entering a week-long mourning period.
In a personally signed tribute released shortly after the announcement of Buhari’s passing. Tinubu expressed deep sorrow, describing the late president as a true patriot, dedicated soldier, and selfless statesman. To formally recognise his service, Tinubu has scheduled an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days,” Tinubu stated. Emphasizing the gravity of the loss.
President Tinubu highlighted Buhari’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria. Noting his leadership both as a military ruler from 1984 to 1985 and as a two-term democratic president from 2015 to 2023. He praised Buhari for standing firm in turbulent times. Also for leading with integrity, strength, and unwavering belief in Nigeria’s future.
Furthermore, Tinubu commended Buhari’s relentless fight against corruption and his role in enforcing discipline within the public service. “He placed the nation above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu affirmed.
Condolences were extended to the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, their children, and the wider Buhari family. Tinubu also acknowledged the support of the people of Katsina State and Daura Emirate.
Assuring a funeral befitting Buhari’s legacy. Tinubu prayed for his soul’s peaceful repose, asking Allah to grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. As Nigeria mourns, the President called on all citizens to draw inspiration from Buhari’s life of service, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism.
