Calvin Bassey’s rise as one of Nigeria’s most dependable players has been highlighted by an impressive run of appearances that has made him a guaranteed starter for the Super Eagles in competitive matches.
The Fulham defender is the only outfield player to have completed Nigeria’s last 13 competitive games without being substituted. Only goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has a longer run, having featured in the last 19 matches. Bassey has not been taken off since September 2024, when he was substituted during a 3–0 AFCON qualifying win over Benin.
Since then, the 25-year-old has played every minute of key qualifiers and tournament matches. He completed full games against Rwanda, Libya and Benin during AFCON qualification, missing just one match when he was an unused substitute against Rwanda at home.
His importance continued into the World Cup qualifiers, where he played all available minutes as Nigeria battled for consistency. Bassey also showed his versatility by featuring at left-back against South Africa, providing an assist for Cyriel Dessers.
During the play-offs, Bassey’s endurance stood out again as he played the full 120 minutes in both the semi-final win over Gabon and the final against DR Congo. At the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, he has maintained the same standard, playing every minute against Tanzania and Tunisia as Nigeria topped Group C.
With Uganda next, Bassey is expected to start again, underlining his growing status as one of the Super Eagles’ most trusted defenders.
