Barq Group and US-based Elroy Air have entered a landmark partnership to advance autonomous aviation in the Middle East. The companies signed a preliminary joint venture agreement valued at $200 million for aircraft manufacturing. The proposed facility will be located in Abu Dhabi, strengthening the UAE’s growing aerospace ambitions. This new plant will focus on producing the Chaparral autonomous cargo aircraft for regional deployment.
Barq Group brings deep expertise in smart mobility and logistics across the MENA region. Meanwhile, Elroy Air contributes cutting-edge innovation in autonomous middle-mile aerial transport systems. Together, both companies aim to accelerate cargo aviation through advanced, scalable manufacturing solutions. This collaboration reflects the rising demand for autonomous logistics across emerging markets.
The Chaparral aircraft features hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing capabilities designed for cargo operations. It supports commercial, humanitarian, and logistics missions, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach locations. Subject to regulatory approvals, deliveries will serve customers across the Middle East and North Africa.
In addition, the venture will provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services within the region. This integrated approach will reduce lead times and improve long-term operational efficiency. Local manufacturing will also strengthen supply chains and improve reliability amid growing regional demand.
The Chaparral carries up to 300 pounds across 300 miles without relying on charging infrastructure. Its hybrid-electric system enables long-range missions in challenging environments. The aircraft achieved a global milestone flight in November 2023.
Barq Group’s leadership described the project as a strategic investment in future mobility. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s “Make it in the Emirates” industrial vision. It also supports Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry cluster. Overall, the partnership positions Abu Dhabi as a leading hub for autonomous cargo aviation.
