A Delta Air Lines flight travelling from Atlanta in the United States to Lagos, Nigeria, unexpectedly returned to its departure airport after spending nearly eight hours in the air. The incident, which affected passengers aboard Flight DL54, disrupted travel plans and sparked reactions from travellers who had already prepared for arrival in Lagos.
The Airbus A330-200 aircraft departed the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday evening for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. However, while flying over the Atlantic Ocean, the crew decided to turn the aircraft around and head back to Atlanta following what the airline later described as an “operational issue.”
Although Delta Air Lines did not disclose the exact cause of the diversion, the airline confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Atlanta in the early hours of Sunday. Flight tracking data showed that the plane had already spent about seven hours and 48 minutes in the air before returning to base.
The development caused frustration among passengers, many of whom had expected to land in Lagos shortly after the announcement. One passenger, identified simply as Adesola, described the experience as emotional and exhausting, noting that several travellers became visibly upset during the unexpected return journey.
Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines apologised for the inconvenience and assured customers that safety remained its top priority. The airline also confirmed that affected passengers were rebooked on alternative flights departing the United States on Sunday. In addition, Delta said it assisted passengers scheduled on the Lagos-to-Atlanta route by arranging the next available flights as quickly as possible.
