The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Sokoto Zone, has warned that Nigeria’s public universities may face another industrial crisis over the Federal Government’s alleged failure to fully implement agreements reached with the union.
Speaking during a press conference in Sokoto on Thursday, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Abubakar Sabo, said delays in implementing the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement were already creating tension across campuses.
According to him, despite the agreement being signed in January 2026, the government had yet to inaugurate the Implementation Monitoring Committee, leading to delays and selective implementation by some university authorities.
Sabo said several universities were yet to implement the agreed 40 per cent salary increment tied to Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances, Earned Academic Allowances and Professorial Allowances.
The union also listed unresolved issues including salary arrears, withheld salaries from the 2022 strike, promotion arrears, pension delays and IPPIS-related salary shortfalls.
ASUU further criticised the proposed establishment of a Nigerian campus of Coventry University, arguing that it could weaken local universities and deepen educational dependency on foreign institutions.
The union also raised concerns over insecurity in Northern Nigeria, saying banditry and kidnapping continued to threaten learning activities across campuses.
