ARISE News Channel has announced the tragic death of its young journalist, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
According to a statement released on Monday, September 29, 2025, through the station’s official X handle, the 29-year-old broadcaster—affectionately called Sommie—died in the early hours of the day.
Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer, had become a trusted face on ARISE News and was admired for her ability to connect with viewers across Nigeria. The statement described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and inspired audiences.”
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe, Abuja, which is currently being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.
Beyond her media career, Sommie was also a trained lawyer and a supportive colleague to many.

Since the news broke, tributes have continued to flow from across the media industry, civil society, the legal profession, and the public. Many Nigerians expressed shock and sadness, describing her as a rising star in journalism and calling for justice.
ARISE News further extended its condolences to Maduagwu’s family and loved ones, stressing that her passion and legacy would remain unforgettable.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the station added.
The Nigeria Police have reportedly launched an investigation into the incident.
