Family Confirms Private Decision
Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering retirement from boxing following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members.
According to his uncle, Adedamola Joshua, the boxer shared his thoughts about stepping away from the sport during a private family discussion after the incident.
“The Emotional Toll Was Too Much”
Speaking during a visit to the family home in Sagamu, Ogun State, Joshua’s uncle said the decision brought relief to the family. He explained that watching Joshua fight had always been emotionally draining for them.
“Each time he entered the ring, we were always anxious,” he said.
“When he got knocked down, it felt like our hearts were leaving our bodies. It was too much trauma for us.”
He added that the family was happy Joshua was considering leaving the sport at a high point in his career.
Lifelong Support for Bereaved Families
Joshua has also pledged to support the families of his late friends, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, for life. Both men died in the accident and were long-time members of his boxing team.
Ghami worked as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer. They had travelled with him to Nigeria to visit family when the crash occurred.
Emotional Public Tribute
On Sunday, Joshua broke his silence with a post on social media, sharing photos with the bereaved families. He captioned the images “My Brother’s Keeper,” a phrase drawn from the Bible that reflects responsibility and care for others.
Sources close to the boxer described him as deeply loyal and committed to standing by the families of the deceased.
Details of the Accident
The accident happened on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. Ghami and Ayodele died instantly.
Joshua was pulled from the wreckage by rescuers and taken to hospital. He later received treatment for minor injuries and was discharged.
Funeral and Community Reaction
Joshua attended an emotional funeral service in London, where mourners gathered to honour the two men. The coffins were placed side by side as prayers were offered before burial arrangements were completed.
Back in Sagamu, community members expressed gratitude that Joshua survived while mourning the loss of his friends. One resident described him as a source of pride to the community and urged him not to turn away from his roots.
Legal Developments
The Ogun State Police have charged the driver of the vehicle with multiple offences, including dangerous driving and causing death. The case has been adjourned until January 20.
The driver has pleaded not guilty, claiming the accident was caused by brake failure.
