The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has urged Nigerians to make national unity and sacrificial service priorities, while warning against actions and political activities that could deepen divisions.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Church’s 15th General Synod in Ogun State.
The Synod raised concerns over insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping and killings, while urging the government to strengthen intelligence gathering and reclaim areas affected by insecurity.
Ahead of the 2027 elections, the Church called on political actors to place national interests above partisan considerations and avoid hate speech, vote-buying and misinformation. It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain neutrality and transparency and called for an independent judiciary in election matters.
The Synod further raised concerns over healthcare, education and the economy, calling for stronger public institutions, improved education funding and measures to ease pressure on household purchasing power.
On agriculture, it warned of worsening food insecurity and called for better farm security, affordable credit and transparent agricultural support.
The Church also condemned xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa and called for stronger diplomatic engagement. Other recommendations included intensified efforts against drug abuse, reduced governance costs and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
The Synod reaffirmed its call for justice, peace and accountability as part of efforts to strengthen national unity.
