The Abia State Government has assured members of the Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU) that the upcoming electric buses will complement, not replace, their operations.
The assurance was given by Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, on Tuesday during the 2025 ASTOPU reward and empowerment ceremony at Aba Town Hall. He urged operators to prioritise security and sobriety, while pledging continued government support.
Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, praised tricycle operators for their cooperation, particularly in revenue contributions, and said they stand to benefit further from government interventions beyond infrastructure.
Representatives from the Aba Divisional Police and FRSC Aba Unit commended ASTOPU for partnering with security agencies, contributing to improved road safety and reduced traffic accidents. Other stakeholders, including Abia SME Microfinance Bank and Abia State Harmonised Taskforce, encouraged proper documentation of operators and applauded road rehabilitation efforts that improved transport conditions in Aba.
ASTOPU Chairman, Comrade Victor Azubuike, said the event honoured operators who returned lost items to passengers, with 164 operators recognised for their honesty. Beneficiaries received bags of rice and awards, while pledging continued support for the union and state government.
