The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that 26 passengers and crew members sustained injuries following a train incident along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor on Monday.
The NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, said the incident occurred around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station when a loud bang was heard as parts of the train formation collided.
According to him, the Kaduna–Abuja service (KA-2) had departed Rigassa Station at 7:15 a.m. and was approaching Asham Station when the power car and trailing locomotive collided with one of the coaches, possibly due to a coupler issue.
He noted that no coach derailed, although three components — locomotive 2809, power car BVA0002, and passenger coach SP0006 — were detached after the incident.
A total of 481 people were on board, including passengers, crew members, security personnel, vendors and cleaners. The 26 injured individuals received varying degrees of injuries.
Despite the incident, the train continued its journey, arriving at Idu Station with a delay of 38 minutes.
Opeifa added that services resumed later in the day, with subsequent trips operating along the corridor after recovery efforts were completed.
