The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council has demanded a ₦154,000 minimum wage for public workers. The council also proposed a 120 percent increase in salaries and allowances nationwide.
In a letter to the Office of the Head of Civil Service, the union stressed urgency. It explained that workers face worsening economic hardship across the country. Consequently, many struggle to meet basic living expenses.
The council described the current condition as a “life of servitude” for workers. It argued that rising inflation has reduced the real value of salaries. In addition, fuel prices, transport costs, and food prices continue to increase sharply.
Over time, these economic pressures have weakened workers’ purchasing power significantly. Therefore, many public servants now face financial instability and reduced living standards. This situation has also affected morale and productivity across the public sector.
The council called for an immediate review of salary structures and allowances. It emphasised fairness, sustainability, and alignment with current economic realities. Furthermore, it urged authorities to begin negotiations without delay.
The proposal includes harmonising wages across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. It also recommends extending implementation to state and local government levels. As a result, workers nationwide would benefit from consistent wage structures.
Additionally, the council suggested introducing automatic cost-of-living adjustments. These adjustments would align salaries with inflation trends over time. It also proposed non-monetary benefits like subsidised transport and housing support.
Despite challenges, the council acknowledged workers’ continued dedication and professionalism. It, however, insisted that urgent action is necessary to protect their welfare.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue and collaboration with the government. It added that timely action would prevent unrest and strengthen public service delivery nationwide.
