Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says the team’s belief and determination remain strong as Nigeria prepare to face Lesotho in Friday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Polokwane, South Africa.
Speaking after the team’s second training session at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Ekong said the players are optimistic and united.
“We are optimistic. We’re always going to fight to the end. We believe — we never stop believing,” he said.
Ekong added that the Super Eagles have always been confident in their qualification chances.
“It’s been the same for us all along. We have to win these games. We’re very optimistic and focused on Friday,” he said.
Coach Eric Chelle now has 20 players in camp, following the arrival of Zaidu Sanusi and Akor Adams, while Alhassan Yusuf is expected on Thursday. Injuries to Bright Osayi-Samuel, Cyriel Dessers, and Felix Agu have forced late squad changes, with Christantus Uche and Sanusi drafted in as replacements.
Midfielder Wilfred Ndidi stressed the need to stay focused.
“These two games are crucial. First, we focus on Lesotho, then Benin. The most important thing now is Lesotho,” he said.
Defender Calvin Bassey urged calmness under pressure, while forward Terem Moffi expressed confidence in Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
“We’re confident about qualifying for the World Cup. We just have to do our part,” Moffi said.
The Super Eagles face Lesotho on Friday at 6 p.m. local time (5 p.m. Nigeria time) in Polokwane, aiming for maximum points before returning home to battle Benin Republic.
