Sports stakeholders have criticised the reported exclusion of volleyball from the upcoming National Sports Festival, describing the decision as a major setback for Nigerian sports development.
Retired sports administrator and FIVB Level 3 coach Augustine Odumo described the move as embarrassing, arguing that volleyball remains one of Nigeria’s most respected Olympic sports.
Odumo said volleyball has built a strong sporting identity over the years and should never have been considered for removal from the festival.
Former Kano Pillars Volleyball Club coach Musa Baba-musa also condemned the decision, calling it insensitive and poorly calculated.
Critics argue that removing volleyball while including lesser-known local sports raises concerns about transparency and priorities within Nigeria’s sporting administration.
The controversy has sparked debate among athletes and sports lovers, with many calling on authorities to reconsider the decision before the festival begins.
