Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. He stepped down to pursue the Bauchi State governorship race in 2027. The Ministry confirmed his resignation on Monday through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Accordingly, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter shortly after noon. Furthermore, reports indicate he plans to contest under the APC platform. This move aligns with his long-term political ambitions in Bauchi State. Meanwhile, his resignation follows a presidential directive issued earlier in March.
The directive required political appointees seeking office to resign promptly. Specifically, the order came through the office of SGF George Akume.It set March 31, 2026, as the official resignation deadline. As a result, several government officials may step down in coming days. The directive affects ministers, advisers, assistants, and agency heads nationwide.
Moreover, the policy aims to ensure transparency ahead of the 2027 elections. It also seeks to prevent conflicts of interest within public offices.
