Eight people have been killed in a fatal road crash that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, December 11, opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The accident involved a trailer and a bus carrying students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS). Eleven people were on board the bus, all of whom were male.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which confirmed the incident through its Public Education Officer, Peter Longsan, seven people were pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim later died in the hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to eight. Three others are currently receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the bus was speeding and engaged in wrongful overtaking, which caused the driver to lose control and ultimately crash.
In his reaction, the Sector Commander of FRSC Plateau, Olajide Mogaji, issued a strong appeal to motorists and drivers to avoid reckless practices that are major causes of fatalities in road crashes. He specifically urged them to avoid night trips, excessive speed, dangerous driving, and driving while under the influence or when fatigued, encouraging the public to report road emergencies by calling the FRSC toll-free number 122.
