President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police. Presidential aides confirmed the decision to journalists on Tuesday. They spoke privately but expressed certainty about the development.
According to sources, the President directed Egbetokun to step aside. The directive reportedly occurred during a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. One aide clearly stated that Egbetokun had left office. Furthermore, another aide revealed that officials were preparing a formal announcement.
He added that the government would release the statement shortly. Meanwhile, efforts to reach police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin proved unsuccessful. Calls and messages sent to him received no response.
Similarly, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga did not answer inquiries. However, senior police sources suggested a successor may already exist. Although authorities have not issued confirmation, speculation continues to grow. Insiders disclosed that Tunji Disu has been contacted regarding the position.
They explained that officials now await formal confirmation. Tinubu originally appointed Egbetokun on June 19, 2023. However, controversy later surrounded his continued stay in office. In September 2024, Egbetokun reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.
Nevertheless, lawmakers amended the Police Act, extending his tenure. Consequently, his removal marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s police leadership. Observers now anticipate swift clarification from the presidency.
