Three weeks after action began in the lower division, focus has shifted to the Club Cricket Committee Premier League, Nigeria’s top cricket division, which kicked off last weekend with exciting matches at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval and the University of Lagos Cricket Oval.
At the TBS Oval, defending champions Rising Stars opened their title defence with a 31-run victory over MRI Warriors. Vishal Sharma stood out with an impressive 56 runs off 41 balls, hitting eight boundaries and one six. The second match between Super Eagles Cricket Club and Island Titans Cricket Club was abandoned due to rain.
The UNILAG Oval recorded the biggest win of the weekend as Foundation Cricket Club dominated newly promoted Rocks Cricket Club of Abeokuta with a 109-run victory. Foundation chose to bat and produced a powerful total of 223 for four in 20 overs. David Ankrah led the charge with a blistering 86 runs off 29 balls, supported by Bright Nyong with 55 off 27 balls and Elijah Saturday with 50 off 38.
Rocks CC struggled in their chase, losing early wickets and failing to build momentum. They managed 114 for five in 20 overs, falling far short of the target as Foundation’s bowlers controlled the game throughout.
In the second match at UNILAG, Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club narrowly lost by one wicket to Federal Government College Warri in a tense finish.
