With the resignation deadline for political appointees expiring today, political activities are intensifying ahead of the 2027 elections.
President Bola Tinubu had directed all appointees seeking elective offices to step down by March 31, in line with the Electoral Act 2026.
So far, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned to contest the Bauchi governorship, while the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu, stepped down to pursue a senatorial seat in Kebbi.
Other resignations include Nasiru Gawuna, who is reportedly set to join the African Democratic Congress, and Abdulrazak Namdas, who is eyeing the Adamawa governorship.
More ministers, including Adebayo Adelabu and Bosun Tijani, are still consulting on possible bids.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, party primaries will run from April 23 to May 30, 2026.
The wave of exits is expected to lead to a cabinet reshuffle and marks the beginning of intense political realignments ahead of 2027.
