French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a stern warning to European allies, cautioning them not to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin. He described Putin as “an ogre at our gates”, stressing that Moscow remains a major threat to European stability.
Peace Talks in Focus
Macron’s remarks came as discussions of a possible peace summit between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gained momentum. The talks followed meetings between U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump and European leaders, centered on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
Putin as a Destabilizing Force
Speaking on LCI, Macron argued that Putin has “rarely honoured his commitments” and consistently acted as a destabilizing force. He accused the Russian leader of redrawing borders to consolidate power and said Russia was unlikely to embrace peace or democracy soon.
A Threat to Europe
Macron likened Putin to a predator, warning: “Putin needs to keep eating. That means he is a predator, an ogre at our gates.” While clarifying that France is not under direct attack, Macron insisted Europe must remain vigilant.
The French president’s statement underscores rising European concerns over Russia’s intentions and the need for unity in defending regional security.
