The Nigeria Police Force has stepped up enforcement of its social media policy.In the last month, at least 10 officers faced disciplinary measures for violating regulations. Disciplinary actions included dismissal, demotion, severe reprimand, and demobilisation. A senior police source disclosed that the Force now monitors officers’ social media activity closely.
“One officer was dismissed, another demoted, while others received severe reprimands or demobilisation,” the source said. One notable case involved Sergeant Anemena Favour, demoted to Corporal after a TikTok live broadcast. Favour, stationed at Special Protection Unit Base 25 in Asaba, Delta State, violated lawful orders.
She was found guilty under Paragraphs E(iii) and F of Police Regulation 370, Act 2, 2020. The Department of Finance and Administration at Force Headquarters in Abuja reviewed the case. Severely reprimanded officers cannot access promotions or certain benefits for six months. Previously, officers underwent social media policy training at police colleges to prevent violations.
The policy allows limited social media use, only by authorised personnel such as the IGP, zonal assistants, or PPROs. Unauthorised identification as a police officer on social media is strictly prohibited. Authorities remain concerned as viral videos and live broadcasts of officers in uniform continue. The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes discipline to maintain public trust and professional standards online.
