Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the Federal Government to prioritise repairing Nigeria’s existing roads instead of embarking on new highway projects.
Obi said major roads such as the Asaba–Benin Expressway, a key route linking several South-East, South-South and North-Central states to Lagos, have deteriorated badly, causing severe traffic congestion and economic hardship.
According to him, government resources should focus on reconstructing and maintaining critical infrastructure that directly benefits Nigerians rather than projects that attract political attention but offer limited immediate impact.
He stressed that functional roads remain essential for economic growth, transportation and business activities across the country.
