Physicians strongly caution that using both medicines together can lead to a dangerous overdose. They explain that Procold already contains Piriton as one of its active ingredients. Therefore, adding extra Piriton doubles the antihistamine dose and increases sedation.
Doctors note that Procold includes paracetamol, Piriton, and phenylephrine, which work well individually. The medication helps relieve headaches, nasal blockage, and sleeplessness caused by colds and allergies. However, taking another Piriton tablet intensifies side effects and creates serious health risks. This concern is especially significant for people who drive or operate machinery.
According to experts, overdosing on Piriton can impair alertness and reduce consciousness. It may also cause dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, and urinary retention. Additionally, alcohol can worsen these reactions and pose further safety concerns. For this reason, physicians strongly discourage self-medication and unsupervised drug combinations.
Doctors advise patients to seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than three days. Persistent symptoms may indicate sinusitis, nasal polyps, or even more serious health issues. They stress that many colds are viral and require minimal or no medication. Drinking water, resting, and eating nutritious foods can help the body recover naturally.
Furthermore, experts recommend steam inhalation for individuals with nasal congestion. They add that modern practice favors non-sedating antihistamines like loratadine for daytime use. Physicians urge Nigerians to avoid drug misuse and consult healthcare professionals for proper treatment.
