The Osun State Government has urged residents showing tuberculosis (TB) symptoms to undergo screening immediately. Early detection can prevent severe complications and save lives.
Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, spoke at an awareness campaign and free TB screening in Osogbo, marking this year’s World Tuberculosis Day. The event attracted health practitioners and volunteers, organized in collaboration with the Damien Foundation.
The campaign started at Freedom Park, Osogbo, moving through the Igbona area, where officials educated residents on TB’s early signs. The walk ended at Ayetoro, offering free TB screening to interested residents.
Dr. Hakeem Bello, Director of Public Health, representing Adekunle, highlighted Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to intensify TB screening. “Screening helps identify patients, treat them, and prevent further spread,” he said.
Dispelling misconceptions, medical practitioners clarified that TB is not a spiritual affliction. Residents with persistent cough, prolonged fever, or unexplained weight loss should seek medical attention promptly.
Dr. Rotimi Oladele, Programme Manager for Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Buruli Ulcer Control, revealed that Osun recorded 4,000 new TB cases in the last quarter of 2025. He emphasized that early detection reduces mortality and curbs disease transmission.
World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on March 24, raises awareness about TB’s global impact and reinforces efforts to eliminate the disease. Osun State continues leading community-based TB interventions to protect residents.
