Wesley University, Ondo, has approved a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees for several academic programmes ahead of the 2025/2026 session. The fee slash, however, excludes high-demand professional courses such as Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Law, and other selected medical and allied health disciplines.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Obeka, disclosed this during a press briefing to announce the institution’s 14th convocation ceremony on Saturday. He noted that the downward review is part of the university’s commitment to easing financial pressure on students and parents amid Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
According to Obeka, the new fee structure aligns with Wesley University’s drive to offer “affordable, accessible, and inclusive education” to more Nigerian families.
He said:
“In response to prevailing economic challenges and in line with Wesley University’s commitment to affordable, accessible and inclusive education, management has approved a moderate downward review of general school fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.”
Slight Increase for Professional Programmes
While many programmes will benefit from the 50% cut, the VC confirmed that the university has implemented a slight upward review for professional courses. This adjustment, he explained, is necessary to maintain the specialised facilities, experienced faculty, clinical training equipment, and accreditation standards required for medical and law-related programmes.
He stated:
“A slight upward adjustment has been applied exclusively to programmes in medicine and surgery, nursing, law, and select medical and allied health disciplines. These adjustments are essential to maintain specialised facilities, faculty expertise, laboratory equipment, clinical training, and regulatory benchmarks.”
Obeka further stressed that the revised fee structure reflects a balance between compassion and quality assurance, aiming to maintain academic excellence without compromising global competitiveness.
Rising Student Enrolment
The Vice-Chancellor also revealed that Wesley University, owned by the Methodist Church of Nigeria, has witnessed a significant rise in student enrolment. This growth follows the National Universities Commission’s approval of several new academic programmes, which has strengthened the university’s appeal nationwide.
