The countdown is almost over as the 2025 World Athletics Championships kick off in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21. With less than a day to go, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has thrown its full weight behind Team Nigeria. Urging the athletes to rise to the occasion and make the nation proud.
Nigeria will be represented by a 15-member squad featuring a mix of proven stars and emerging talents. At the forefront is world champion and women’s 100m hurdles record holder Tobi Amusan. Who will be aiming to extend her dominance on the global stage. Alongside her, sprinter Kayinsola Ajayi will look to capitalize on his fine form in the men’s 100m. While Israel Okon, Udodi Onwuzurike, Samuel Ogazi, and Chidi Okezie will strengthen Nigeria’s chances in the sprints and 400m races.
In the men’s field events, Ezekiel Nathaniel (400m hurdles), Charles Godfred (long jump), and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (shot put) will carry the country’s hopes.
The women’s lineup is equally impressive. National long jump champion Prestina Ochonogor and Olympic silver medallist Ese Brume headline the jumps. In the discus, African record holder Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi will compete. While Rosemary Chukwuma (100m) and Sade Olatoye (hammer throw) complete the team.
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to back the athletes. Stressing that they have all the resources and moral support needed to succeed. He encouraged the team to compete with determination and focus, noting that every podium finish would inspire millions back home.
After finishing medal-less at the 2023 edition in Budapest, Team Nigeria is determined to turn the tide in Tokyo. With a balanced squad combining experience and youthful energy, hopes are high that the green and white will return to the medals table.
