The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a “timely and thoughtful contribution” to strengthening the international system.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria commended China for unveiling the GGI during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Tianjin on September 1, 2025.
According to the government, the Global Governance Initiative builds on China’s earlier frameworks—the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative—while addressing key challenges such as climate change, digital inequality, representation in global institutions, and emerging technologies.
Nigeria welcomed the GGI’s five core principles: sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centred governance, and results-oriented action. The FG noted that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national development goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and its principle of strategic autonomy.
As one of Africa’s largest economies and a strong voice in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria sees the GGI as an opportunity to push for UN reforms, inclusive governance in artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, while also promoting equitable development across the Global South.
By endorsing the initiative, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to a just, inclusive, and effective global order that respects sovereignty, upholds international law, and strengthens cooperation among nations.
