American rapper Nicki Minaj, born Onika Maraj-Petty, is set to speak at a United Nations event in New York on Tuesday. Focusing on reported jihadist attacks targeting Christians in Nigeria. The event will feature the United States ambassador to the UN, Michael Waltz, and Alex Bruesewitz, an adviser to former President Donald Trump and convener of the gathering.
The announcement was first reported by Time magazine’s senior political correspondent, Eric Cortellessa, via his X account. Ambassador Waltz praised Minaj, calling her “not only arguably the greatest female recording artist, but also a principled individual who refuses to remain silent in the face of injustice.” He expressed gratitude that she is using her global platform to highlight what he termed “atrocities against Christians in Nigeria.”
Minaj responded by expressing appreciation for the opportunity and emphasising the seriousness of the responsibility. She stated she would “never stand down in the face of injustice,” stressing that her influence carries a significant purpose and can help raise awareness on critical international issues.
The UN appearance follows claims by former President Trump, who described ongoing violence in Nigeria as a “Christian genocide”. He suggested designating the country a “Country of Particular Concern.” Trump also called on Congress to take immediate action. A position Nicki Minaj publicly supported.
However, the Federal Government of Nigeria has denied that the violence is religiously motivated. Maintaining that insecurity stems mainly from criminal activities rather than faith-based attacks. Despite this, US officials continue to monitor the situation and express concern over reported incidents.
