Nigerian Exchange Limited NGX has launched Commercial Paper listings after securing approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission. This new feature deepens Nigeria’s short-term debt market and broadens corporate financing options. It also expands NGX’s integrated marketplace, which already includes equities, fixed income, ETFs and derivatives.
Group Managing Director and CEO of NGX Group, Temi Popoola, applauded the SEC for enabling further innovation. He noted that the initiative aligns with NGX’s goal of building a complete capital-markets ecosystem. According to him, the exchange aims to reinforce transparency and promote inclusive participation. His vision highlights a marketplace designed to support sustainable economic growth.
Commercial papers serve as short-term, unsecured debt instruments for corporate needs. They offer companies quick access to working capital and other short-term funding. These instruments usually mature within 270 days and are issued at a discount. Investors benefit from reliable short-term returns while corporates enjoy cost-effective financing.
CEO of NGX, Jude Chiemeka, described the launch as a major step for issuers. He explained that the platform improves funding efficiency outside traditional banking channels. Increased transparency, he added, will strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s debt market. NGX will continue working with issuers and intermediaries to deepen liquidity.
CEO of NGX Regulation Limited, Olufemi Shobanjo, emphasised the importance of strict oversight. His assurance focuses on strong disclosure standards and investor protection.
With this listing window now active, corporates can trade both conventional and non-interest commercial papers directly on NGX.
