Nestlé Nigeria has reached a major sustainability milestone by achieving 100 percent plastic neutrality nationwide. This means the company now recovers every tonne of plastic it introduces into the Nigerian market.
This achievement was driven through the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance, Nigeria’s first Producer Responsibility Organisation. The alliance was established in 2018 under the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility policy framework.
Since inception, FBRA has expanded from four founding companies to 49 member organisations. Together, these members actively support plastic recovery, recycling, and circular waste management nationwide.
According to Nestlé Nigeria, sustainability efforts now extend beyond profit toward long-term environmental responsibility. The company emphasised that collaboration remains essential despite ongoing competition within the food and beverage industry.
By working together, companies can address shared environmental challenges more effectively and sustainably. Nestlé Nigeria continues to lead innovation in responsible packaging and plastic reuse solutions.
Notably, the company introduced bottles made with 50 percent recycled PET material. These bottles meet strict food-grade safety standards while reducing environmental impact.
Through FBRA’s operational framework, plastics are collected, recycled, and reintegrated into production cycles. As a result, waste management now creates both environmental and economic value.
Moreover, circularity remains central to Nestlé Nigeria’s long-term sustainability strategy. The company prioritises reuse, transformation, and responsible disposal across its packaging lifecycle.
Since 2018, over 100,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste have been recovered nationwide. This effort has helped clean communities and support thousands of informal waste collectors.
Ultimately, the partnership demonstrates how collaboration can turn waste into wealth. It also positions Nigeria closer to achieving global sustainability and circular economy goals.
