Nestlé has reassured Nigerian parents and caregivers that its infant formula products sold locally are safe. The clarification follows global concerns after Nestlé UK voluntarily recalled specific SMA Infant Formula batches. The recall affected over 50 countries across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia due to possible cereulide contamination.
The company explained that only certain batches supplied by a major vendor were involved. The precautionary recall aimed to prevent nausea and vomiting among infants exposed to the toxin. Nestlé emphasized that its products approved for the Nigerian market were not affected.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed that SMA and NAN formulas sold in Nigeria are safe. She highlighted that the alert was issued to keep Nigerians informed about global food safety developments. The agency continues strict regulatory oversight, including product registration, routine surveillance, and post-market monitoring.
Adeyeye also noted that risks from unauthorized importation, online purchases, or personal carriage during international travel cannot be entirely excluded. NAFDAC remains vigilant to protect infant health and ensure compliance with approved safety and quality standards.
Nestlé Nigeria confirmed that all locally sold SMA and NAN products are safe. The registered SMA range includes Gold 1 (B1-2783), Gold 2 (B1-2780), and Gold 3 (B1-2781), manufactured at the Nestlé Tuas Factory in Singapore.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, particularly for infants and vulnerable populations. NAFDAC emphasized that prompt regulatory action will be taken if any product poses a health risk.
Consumers are therefore assured that Nestlé infant formula products approved for Nigeria remain safe for use.
