The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West zone, has expressed deep concern over persistent power failures. Students across the six Southwestern states are experiencing prolonged electricity outages that disrupt learning and research activities.Adeyemo Josiah, Coordinator of NANS Southwest (Zone D), stated that hostels, libraries, and study centres remain powerless for extended periods.
These disruptions negatively affect academic performance, online learning, and assignment completion. “Students face frustration and anxiety due to unreliable electricity during critical academic periods,” he said.The blackout also raises serious safety concerns. Darkness on campuses creates opportunities for theft, armed robbery, and other criminal activities, endangering students and their belongings.
NANS emphasized that reliable electricity is vital for safety, productivity, and academic excellence.Since his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, Minister Bayo Adelabu has been expected to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges effectively. However, students argue that power supply has steadily declined under his leadership.
Reports suggesting political distractions further fuel doubts about the ministry’s commitment to improving electricity.In response, NANS has issued a strong vote of no confidence in the Ministry of Power’s leadership. The association urges the Federal Government to urgently evaluate ministry performance and implement strategies that restore stable electricity nationwide.“
Students deserve a learning environment that ensures safety, consistent electricity, and uninterrupted academic activities,” Josiah concluded. NANS insists that decisive action is necessary to protect students’ education and wellbeing across South-West Nigeria.
