Veteran entertainer and monarch, Okechukwu Onyegbule, widely known as Okey Bakassi, reflects on his journey. The actor and comedian also serves as traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community, Imo State. For over three decades, he has shaped Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
Initially, comedy began as a university hobby.However, his relocation to Lagos forced a defining decision. He had to choose between paid employment and entertainment. At first, he considered practicing entertainment part-time. Nevertheless, he quickly understood the industry demanded total commitment.
Unlike today, the sector lacked structure and clear pathways. Therefore, he chased opportunities relentlessly and built his brand deliberately. Toward the end of his service year, he chose passion. He embraced entertainment fully before seeking formal employment. That decision marked a turning point in his life.
If joy could pay bills, he believed purpose existed there. Growing up in a lively military household shaped him deeply. Family storytelling sessions sharpened his wit and confidence. Moreover, life in the barracks exposed him to diverse cultures. That environment strengthened his adaptability and creativity.
When acting doors narrowed, he pivoted strategically. Consequently, he refined his stand-up craft and expanded his reach. Soon, stand-up generated more income than acting. Today, he balances entertainment with traditional leadership responsibilities. He believes leadership demands humility and service. Power, he insists, reveals true character. Ultimately, he continues evolving while serving both stage and community.
