Brentford defender Michael Kayode has reaffirmed his ambition to represent Italy at senior international level. However, he also expressed appreciation for the support he receives from Nigerians.
The 21-year-old right-back was born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents. Consequently, he remains eligible to represent either Italy or Nigeria internationally.
Kayode has already represented Italy at several youth levels during his football career. He played for the Italian under-18, under-19, and under-21 national teams.
These appearances provisionally tie him to Italy under international football regulations. Therefore, switching to Nigeria would require a one-time change of association.
Despite Nigeria’s interest, Kayode maintains that his immediate focus remains on earning a senior Italy call-up. Italy will face Northern Ireland in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualification playoffs.
Speaking in an interview, the defender explained that club performances influence national team selection. He stressed that players must perform consistently to receive international invitations.
According to him, delivering strong performances for Brentford remains his current priority. He believes success at club level increases his chances of joining Italy’s senior squad.
Meanwhile, Kayode acknowledged the strong support he receives from Nigerian football fans. He said he feels happy knowing Nigerians celebrate his achievements.
The defender described the opportunity to represent either country as a remarkable privilege. Nevertheless, his long-term ambition remains to play for Italy at senior level.
Kayode also gained recognition during the 2023 European Under-19 Championship. He scored the decisive goal that secured victory for Italy in the final.
At Brentford, the young defender is also known for his powerful long-throw ability. His unique skill often creates attacking opportunities for his teammates.
