Solicitors representing Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie have written to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos, following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has confirmed the suspension of the anaesthesiologist involved, as investigations continue.
In a legal notice dated January 10, 2026, the lawyers accused the hospital and its medical staff of breaching their duty of care. The notice was issued on behalf of Adichie and her partner, Dr Ivara Esege.
According to the lawyers, the child died in the early hours of January 7, 2026, after undergoing diagnostic procedures. These procedures formed part of preparations for a planned medical evacuation to the United States.
However, the child reportedly developed severe complications after sedation. As a result, the parents raised concerns about patient monitoring, transfer procedures, and paediatric anaesthetic care.
In addition, the parents demanded certified copies of all medical records related to their son’s treatment. They also asked the hospital to preserve all physical and electronic evidence linked to the case.
Euracare Hospital stated that it has launched an internal investigation. The hospital also confirmed its cooperation with government authorities.
Confirming government action, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, said officials have begun a full investigation. She added that authorities will take appropriate action once the probe is concluded.
