Fresh political tensions have emerged across several states as Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, begins its primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. The growing crisis has sparked protests, disrupted consensus negotiations, and intensified allegations of candidate imposition in key states, raising fears of internal divisions within the party.
As the primaries officially commenced on Friday, party leaders loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intensified consultations to prevent the disagreements from escalating into a nationwide political crisis. Several APC-controlled states, including Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Oyo, Yobe, and Abia, have reportedly witnessed sharp disagreements over endorsements, automatic tickets, and the adoption of direct primaries.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu urged party members, aspirants, and stakeholders to maintain discipline and embrace sportsmanship throughout the electoral process. According to him, the APC primaries represent more than a contest for party tickets; they also reflect the party’s unity, resilience, and preparedness for another election cycle.
The President warned against returning to what he described as “do-or-die politics,” stressing that internal conflicts could strengthen opposition parties ahead of the elections. Furthermore, he encouraged party leaders to promote consensus arrangements where possible in order to reduce hostility among aspirants.
Tinubu also directed governors and party officials to provide a level playing field for all contestants while urging security agencies to remain professional and focus solely on maintaining peace during the primaries.
