Ikeja Electric has apologised to customers over widespread electricity disruptions across its distribution network. The company linked the outages to gas supply shortages affecting electricity generation nationwide. Consequently, several areas experienced reduced power supply and increased load shedding.
In a public notice released on Friday, the distribution company acknowledged customers’ frustrations. It also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to households and businesses. According to the management, gas constraints have significantly reduced electricity generation on the national grid.
As a result, available power supply dropped across several feeders within the network. The company explained that thermal power plants depend heavily on gas for electricity generation. However, the ongoing fuel shortage has limited their capacity to produce adequate power.
Meanwhile, Ikeja Electric assured customers that industry stakeholders are addressing the situation. The company noted that efforts are ongoing to resolve the gas supply challenges. Furthermore, it stated that relevant authorities are working to stabilise the national grid.
Once resolved, electricity generation and distribution are expected to improve gradually. Ikeja Electric also emphasised its commitment to keeping customers informed about developments. Therefore, the company promised to provide updates as the situation progresses.
Additionally, it urged customers to remain patient while efforts continue to restore stable power supply. The management thanked residents and businesses for their understanding during the disruption.
Reports from the Nigerian Independent System Operator highlighted the scale of the problem. The operator confirmed that national electricity generation dropped below the 4,000-megawatt threshold. By Thursday morning, the grid produced approximately 3,940 megawatts of electricity nationwide. This decline reflects persistent gas supply challenges affecting power plants across Nigeria.
