The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force. Emphasizing the need to uphold legal standards regarding the detention of suspects. He cautioned against unlawful and prolonged detentions, stressing that officers found guilty of such violations would face strict disciplinary actions.
Egbetokun underscored that suspects must not be held beyond the legally permitted timeframe, as stipulated in the Nigerian Constitution. He pointed out that wrongful detentions not only violate fundamental rights but also weaken public trust in the police force.
In a statement released on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reiterated the importance of respecting Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee human dignity and personal liberty.
The IG emphasized that adherence to legal detention periods is a core duty of law enforcement officers. He warned that any officer engaging in unlawful detentions would face serious consequences.
He further called for a culture of accountability within the police force, urging officers to perform their duties with professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.
Adejobi reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to upholding human rights while maintaining law and order. He stressed that all individuals in police custody must be treated with dignity and in compliance with the law.
The current police leadership aims to foster a law enforcement system that not only ensures security but also protects the fundamental rights of all citizens.
