The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) joined millions of professionals worldwide to commemorate International Accounting Day 2025. With the South-West regional event hosted at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos.
The celebration brought together ICAN members, students, and academics to highlight the vital role accountants play. In driving transparency, accountability, and good governance across sectors.
Representing ICAN President Mallam Haruna Yahaya, the immediate past president, Chief DCS Alaribe, praised over five million accounting professionals globally. He described them as “unsung heroes behind the financial stability of businesses, governments, and communities.” Reflecting on the profession’s roots, he cited Luca Pacioli’s 1494 publication on double-entry bookkeeping. Which laid the foundation for modern accounting principles.
“Long before artificial intelligence, accountants were already shaping the world with discipline, accuracy, and integrity,” Yahaya stated. He applauded ICAN’s 67,000 members for upholding professionalism and trust in Nigeria’s economy.
He also recognized global bodies like the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA). For promoting ethical standards and innovation in financial reporting.
The Dean of the School of Management and Business Studies, Dr. Fadipe Adeniyi Olubunmi, expressed joy over YABATECH’s selection as host. He noted that 80% of the department’s lecturers are ICAN fellows. Ensuring that the curriculum aligns with global best practices.
He proudly revealed that two students recently became ICAN members and that the department clinched second place in a regional accounting competition organized by the University of Lagos.
Rector Dr. Adedotun Ibrahim Abdul urged students to take charge of their future, stressing that “accountants remain indispensable wherever accountability exists.” He reaffirmed YABATECH’s dedication to excellence, ethics, and innovation, pledging that the college would continue to uphold the values of the accounting profession.
