Every income earner in Nigeria, whether through a job, business, or investments, must have a Tax Identification Number (TIN). This unique 13-digit number is issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) through the Joint Tax Board (JTB). It helps the government track tax records, payments, and compliance.
A TIN is essential for anyone who wants to open a corporate bank account, register a business, apply for contracts, or access financial and government services. Without it, many official processes can’t move forward.
Types of TIN
There are two main categories of TIN registration in Nigeria:
- Individuals: The TIN is automatically linked to your National Identification Number (NIN).
- Businesses and Organisations: The TIN connects directly to your Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)registration number.
This system ensures accurate identification and smooth tax tracking across individuals and companies.
