Gunmen stormed an informal settlement near Johannesburg, South Africa, late Tuesday night, killing 12 people in a deadly attack that has shocked residents.
According to police, more than 10 armed men arrived in a vehicle and opened fire at multiple locations within the settlement before fleeing the scene.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said eight men and three women died at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital.
The attack occurred in Cleveland, about six kilometres east of Johannesburg’s city centre. Authorities said no arrests had been made and investigations into the motive are ongoing.
South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime, with mass shootings often linked to gang activity and disputes within informal communities.
