Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has sponsored 200 students to India under the newly launched Mutfwang Legacy Scholarship Scheme, marking one of the state’s largest foreign education initiatives in recent years.
The beneficiaries will study Medical Sciences, Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology at Sanskaram University. They were formally sent off at a ceremony held on Tuesday in Jos.
Governor Mutfwang described the programme as a merit-based investment in human capital development, stressing that the selection process was transparent and free from political influence. He said the screening was independently conducted by the host institution.
According to the governor, beneficiaries were selected strictly on merit, without consideration for political affiliation, local government quotas, or institutional backing. He urged the students to uphold discipline and integrity, describing them as ambassadors of Plateau State.
Mutfwang also disclosed that his administration has introduced new education-sector reforms captured in the 2026 budget, including the establishment of a research fund for Plateau indigenes in tertiary institutions, expansion of postgraduate programmes at Plateau State University, and increased support for postgraduate research.
Officials of the Plateau State Scholarship Board described the initiative as the most significant intervention by the board so far, while parents and community leaders at the event commended the merit-based approach and encouraged the students to return with skills that would contribute to the state’s development.
