Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has reached another major milestone with her latest cinema release, Behind The Scenes. The film has crossed the ₦1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office, confirming its place among the most successful films in the country’s cinema history.
FilmOne Entertainment disclosed the achievement in a post shared on its official X handle on Monday. According to the distributor, the film has so far grossed ₦1,109,463,846 across cinemas nationwide.
Fastest Film to Reach ₦1bn in West Africa
FilmOne revealed that Behind The Scenes is now the fastest film in West Africa to cross the ₦1 billion benchmark. The movie also set a new record on Boxing Day, earning ₦129.5 million in a single day. This figure represents the highest single-day box office gross ever recorded on that date.
“Fastest film in West Africa to cross ₦1B+,” FilmOne said. The distributor added that the movie delivered “the highest single-day gross ever on Boxing Day (₦129.5M).”
The company also confirmed that the film is currently the highest-grossing theatrical release of 2025. It continues to attract strong audiences weeks after its cinema debut.
Akindele Extends Her Box Office Dominance
FilmOne highlighted Funke Akindele’s growing influence at the Nigerian box office. According to the distributor, the latest success further strengthens her record-breaking run in Nollywood.
The company described her as “the only director to cross ₦1B+ at the box office three different times.” It also named her “Nollywood’s highest-grossing producer of all time.”
In addition, Akindele has become the first filmmaker to deliver three consecutive ₦1 billion-plus films within one calendar year. No other Nollywood filmmaker has achieved this feat.
Strong Opening and Record Weekend Performance
Behind The Scenes held its advanced screenings on December 10 and 11. It officially opened in cinemas nationwide on December 12. Within days, the film crossed the ₦200 million mark.
FilmOne earlier described the movie’s debut as “the biggest opening weekend of 2025.” The film also set multiple opening weekend records, including the highest weekend admissions recorded during the year.
In a previous update, the distributor announced: “₦512M at the box office. Highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2025. Fastest Nollywood movie to hit ₦500M. Number one film of the weekend.”
Storyline and Cast
The film explores the theme of black tax. It focuses on the emotional and financial pressure faced by individuals who support extended family members. This storyline has resonated strongly with many viewers.
Behind The Scenes stars Scarlet Gomez in the lead role. The cast also includes Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, and reality TV stars Handi and Wanni Danbaki.
