Fountain University, Osogbo, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of eminent historian and cultural icon, Professor Siyan Oyeweso. The University described his demise as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s academic community and cultural heritage.
In a statement, Vice Chancellor Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim extended condolences to the family, colleagues, associates, and students of the late scholar. She emphasized that Professor Oyeweso was not only a revered intellectual but also a close friend and invaluable ally of Fountain University.
“Professor Oyeweso passionately championed scholarship, heritage preservation, and societal development,” Professor Karim said. “He consistently supported Fountain University, inspiring our community, sharing ideas, and advancing our vision through his voice and prestige. His contributions remain deeply embedded in our institution’s history.”
The University highlighted his strong connection with the College of Arts and Education, which led to the formal establishment of an Annual Cultural Day in his honor. The first edition, held in June this year, celebrated Yoruba culture, heritage, scholarship, and youth engagement values central to Professor Oyeweso’s life work.
Professor Karim noted that his passing, shortly after the inaugural Cultural Day, underscores the lasting impact of his legacy. She described him as “an intellectual beacon whose academic influence extended beyond classrooms,” mentoring young scholars and promoting African history and constructive societal dialogue.
Fountain University has pledged to maintain the Annual Cultural Day as a living monument to Professor Oyeweso’s memory. The event will continue promoting scholarship, cultural identity, moral values, and societal transformation, honoring his extraordinary contributions.
