The Nigeria Customs Service has announced new procedures for granting safe passage to foreign vehicles.
This initiative targets personal vehicles temporarily imported or transiting through Nigeria.
According to the service, the policy aligns with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
It also reflects international conventions governing temporary vehicle admission and transit.
The framework applies to non-commercial vehicles owned by international travellers.
These travellers may visit Nigeria for tourism, business, diplomacy, or personal reasons.
Importantly, the policy aims to simplify cross-border travel and vehicle movement.
At the same time, it strengthens Nigeria’s compliance with global trade obligations.
The Customs Service stated that the initiative supports foreign trade facilitation and regional integration.
Furthermore, it reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to international best practices.
The legal basis includes sections of the NCS Act, 2023.
It also aligns with conventions like the Revised Kyoto Convention and UN TIR Convention.
Other supporting frameworks include the Istanbul Convention and ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol.
World Customs Organisation guidelines and CPD regulations also guide the implementation.
Travellers must present valid documents at entry points.
These include passports, international driver’s licenses, and vehicle registration papers.
Additionally, travellers must provide insurance documents and a Carnet de Passages en Douane.
After verification, Customs will issue a temporary admission permit.
The permit remains valid for up to 90 days.
However, travellers may request a 30-day extension if approved.
Vehicles admitted under this scheme may move freely within Nigeria.
Nevertheless, owners must not sell, lease, or use them commercially.
At exit points, travellers must present the vehicle and customs documents.
In case of accidents or theft, travellers should notify Customs immediately.
Overall, the Nigeria Customs Service reaffirmed its commitment to transparency.
The initiative enhances security, efficiency, and cross-border cooperation across the region.
