FIFA has sanctioned the Nigeria Football Federation and the DR Congo Football Federation over disciplinary incidents during the disputed 2026 World Cup African play-off between the Nigeria national football team and the DR Congo national football team.
The match, played in Morocco on November 16, 2025, ended with DR Congo defeating Nigeria 4–3 on penalties to advance to the intercontinental play-offs.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary report, Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after spectators threw objects during the match, breaching provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The Congolese football federation received a heavier sanction of 5,000 Swiss francs after supporters were found to have used laser pointers during the game.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle had earlier accused DR Congo officials of using voodoo following the defeat.
The sanctions come as expectations grow over FIFA’s decision on the NFF’s protest alleging the use of ineligible players by DR Congo during the African play-off.
