The Bank of Agriculture (BOA) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have distributed 2,000 tractors and heavy-duty equipment to mechanised farmers under the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme (NAMP).
Supported by Heifer International and Heifer Nigeria, the initiative aims to boost productivity and strengthen national food security.
BOA Managing Director, Mr Ayodeji Sontinrin, said the programme goes beyond equipment distribution and is designed to build sustainable systems that support smallholder farmers and generate long-term economic value.
“NAMP is more than tractor distribution. It is about building systems that endure and serve the millions of farmers who feed the nation,” he said, urging beneficiaries to maintain the equipment and honour repayment commitments.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, revealed that over 100,000 applications were received in the first phase, reflecting strong demand.
Kyari said each tractor could service about 600 hectares annually, potentially impacting 1.2 million farmers across 1.5 million hectares. He added that many service providers are youth- and women-led enterprises supported by structured financing models.
The programme is expected to improve yields, reduce labour constraints, and accelerate Nigeria’s transition to competitive, mechanised agriculture.
