Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has declared that the PDP no longer leads Nigeria’s opposition politics. He blamed deep internal divisions for the party’s steady decline and weakening national relevance.
According to Fayose, the PDP’s problems come from within, not from external political pressure. He stressed that internal disunity has damaged the party’s strength and credibility over time. Speaking on Arise News, Fayose analysed opposition politics and emerging political platforms nationwide.
He argued that weak structures naturally collapse when stronger forces gain momentum. Therefore, he dismissed claims linking the PDP’s crisis to President Bola Tinubu.Instead, he maintained that self-inflicted failures caused the party’s present struggles.
Fayose described the PDP as a divided house lacking unity and strategic direction. He explained that Nigeria often operates with two dominant political parties simultaneously. Consequently, attention has shifted toward alternative platforms gaining national traction.
Fayose highlighted Peter Obi as a major political force ahead of the 2027 elections. He noted that Obi’s defection has significantly boosted the African Democratic Congress. According to him, Obi’s presence alone transformed the ADC’s political relevance.
Fayose downplayed the influence of other figures reportedly linked to the party. He described them as politically exhausted and lacking popular momentum. However, he repeatedly emphasised Obi’s unique appeal and electoral pull.
Fayose stated that Obi brings meaning, traction, and visibility to any political platform. He argued that Obi’s influence would remain strong regardless of party affiliation. Therefore, ADC’s current relevance largely depends on Obi’s continued association. Fayose concluded that without Obi, the ADC would struggle to maintain national attention.
