The proprietor of Preston International School, Akure, Dr Toyin Ajayi, has called for increased investment in education, describing poor funding as one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector.
Speaking at a leadership training programme organised by the Servant Leader Foundation in Ondo State, Ajayi said inadequate funding had contributed to poor teacher welfare, declining standards and shortages of qualified personnel.
“The problem we have as a nation is that we find it difficult to move on to ensure that we have comparable standards globally. Funding is a major issue,” he said.
Ajayi also advocated curriculum reforms, arguing that Nigeria’s education system places too much emphasis on memorisation rather than creativity and problem-solving.
He urged governments at all levels to prioritise education funding and improve remuneration to stem the migration of teachers and lecturers to other sectors and countries.
